Ghost-Eye: A Novel by Amitav Ghosh

Few writers have the ability to weave history, memory and the present moment into stories that feel both intimate and global. Amitav Ghosh has long been known for this rare gift, and Ghost-Eye promises to continue that tradition. Set across two continents and multiple timelines, this novel explores questions of identity, memory, fate and humanity’s fragile relationship with the planet. With themes of reincarnation, psychology and environmental consciousness, Ghost-Eye stands as one of the most anticipated literary releases of 2025.

About the Book

Ghost-Eye begins with a small but unsettling incident in late 1960s Calcutta. A three-year-old girl named Varsha Gupta asks for fish at lunch, something entirely forbidden in her strictly vegetarian household. What seems like a childish demand soon takes on a disturbing dimension when Varsha insists that she remembers another life. She speaks of a mud house by a river, of catching and cooking fish with a different mother, and of memories that should not belong to her.

Unable to explain her behaviour, the Gupta family seeks help from Dr Shoma Bose, a psychiatrist who has been studying what are known as cases of the reincarnation type. As Varsha’s revelations deepen, Shoma’s own understanding of reality, memory and identity begins to unravel.

Half a century later, Varsha’s old case file resurfaces and draws the attention of a group of environmental activists. This discovery pulls Shoma’s nephew, Dinu, into a search that spans continents and generations. As Dinu follows the traces of Varsha’s life, he is forced to confront buried memories of his own past and the interconnected histories that bind people, places and ecological crises.

Moving between late sixties Calcutta and present day Brooklyn, Ghost-Eye blends psychological mystery with historical depth and environmental urgency, creating a narrative that questions how the past continues to shape the present.
